Winners are grinners at Targa Tasmania 2018!
With the ultimate tarmac rally complete, it is satistfying to look back on just what was achieved by Stellar Motorsport duo Davyd Hooper and his dad Philip. At 74 years old, Philip was quite possibly the oldest driver on a route from Launceston to Hobart spanning 6 days which travelled over 2000 kilometres - more than 400 of those being competitive.
Not the fastest crew to finish but every one of the 33 stages were complete in under the required time qualifying them for the coveted Targa Trophy.
Davyd has competed in this event 5 times previously - twice as a driver and 3 times as a navigator - and this is the first time receiving a trophy.
While some teams didn't manage to keep their vehicles on the road, Philip and Davyd kept on track and on time, despite having a turbo hose blow off, oil leaks, smoke filled cabs and rear suspension which was too soft to handle the roads effectively.
Driver problems including stomach issues, migraines caused by sun in the eyes all added to the challenge but they made it to Hobart, made it across the finish and together conquered Targa Tasmania, the ultimate tarmac rally.
Well done guys, well done Stellar Motorsport and subscribe to their YouTube Channel for immersive 360 degree virtual reality footage of each stage.
